What does Seva mean?
In Yoga we call it ‘seva’ when we provide selfless service to others. Seva is more than just helping others. This is because it describes the actions that someone takes to uplift the collective. Further, it is motivated by a desire to uplift others, by understanding other’s needs. Moreover, it comes from a genuine desire to serve.
In this life, there are three paths we can take to obtain moksha, or liberation. One is through self-realization, The second path is through devotion to your Ishta Devata, which is to show devotion to whichever deity you like. The third path is through seva. You can be liberated by doing community service and continually doing service for others.
The sacred Hindu text, the Bhagavad Gita, encourages selfless service as a way to develop spiritually; thus, it is closely linked to the concept of Karma yoga (Yoga of Action).
Doing good for the benefit of all is something that many of us would like to do more of, but we feel like we don’t have the time to do so. It’s important to remember that we don’t always have to do something big or something that takes a lot of time in order to do something for the good of all.
Here are some easy ways of integrating selfless service into your every day life:
☆Next time you go for a coffee why not pay a drink (coffee, tea, or whatever) for the next customer.
☆We all are good at something, Why not offer to share your expertise with somebody
☆See some litter lying around. Pick it up and put it in the next bin. It could even motivate them to do the same. We don’t always need to give service to other humans. Serving the earth also means serving humanity.
☆Lastly, if you do regularly have some time to spare then why not find a volunteer opportunity in your local community, a prison, an animal shelter, a hospital, a care home, a school or a charity. Not only will you be supporting others but you will also learn and gain a lot from it yourself.
We hope you enjoy adding a little SEVA to your daily lives… but beware – it can become addictive 😁
